Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, located on the Northern Arctic Circle. We have eight seasons here in the north, each one providing the opportunity to experience Lapland and the Rovaniemi countryside in completely new ways.
Christmastime
As the year reaches its end at the Arctic Circle, the magical Christmas period begins, the romantic twilight sets in with its magical blue moments. The Arctic Circle beckons all Teddy Bears all over the world to come and meet Santa Claus and enjoy the gently glowing twilight. Santa Claus, the world’s best known Finn, each year receives thousands of visitors that want to tell their gift wishes to Santa in person. Surrounded by wintry and dusky forests, the Arctic Circle is a lifetime experience for visitors young and old. Here you can see reindeer, Santa’s most important helpers, or cute huskies, as well as learn how to ride a snowmobile and cross the Arctic Circle in a style of your choice – in an unforgettable way no matter which style you choose! Santa Claus greets visitors at the Santa Claus Office every day, throughout the year – even during the summertime. The Arctic Circle also houses the Santa Claus Main Post Office that receives hundreds of thousand of letters for Santa from every corner of the globe. Send cards from the Santa Claus Main Post Office to friends and loved ones.
Frozen Twilight Time
The year begins with the freezing temperatures of the twilight. There’s only a few hours of daylight each day at the Northern Arctic Circle. Outdoors you can experience the thrilling sound of the frozen wintertime silence, and with the clear skies at this latitude you may also experience the Northern Light (Aurora Borealis). The Northern Lights are called Revontulet in Finnish, which means Fox Fires. The name derives from old folklore that claims the light phenomena were created from sparks made by a fox swishing its tail on the snowy fell.
Spring Snowscape Time
Is a time from February to April where the snowscapes glisten brightly in the sunshine. On a sunny day, the sunshine reflected of the snow is dazzling. The shades in nature are purely blue and white. Clear blue skies and pure white snow. White snowscapes and sunshine beckon you to get outdoors and into nature for skiing or even ice fishing on a frozen waterway.
Ice Break-up Time
In April – May winter turns into spring. In the month of May, the day has become so long that the nights are already brightly lit. Spring brings the migratory birds, reindeer calves and jingling icebergs floating down the rivers. Nature is awakening to a new season of growth, and both people and animals eagerly await the coming of summer.
Midnight Sun Time
The Midnight Sun shines from early June through to early July. Time for nature to blossom. Lapland has only one time of day – a summer’s day. The view from the top of the Ounasvaara Hill over the river valley basking in the Midnight Sun is breathtaking. The great rivers of Rovaniemi, Kemijoki and Ounasjoki are part of the cultural history of the region; the rivers have been important routes for travel, provided good catches of salmon, and acted as ways of transporting lumber and lumberjacks. One of Rovaniemi’s best-known sculptures – Jätkänpatsas (Lumberjack Statue) has in its own right symbolised Rovaniemi for decades in the riverside landscapes of the log floating area.
Harvest Time
July – August is harvest time in Lapland. This is the time for picking wild berries and mushrooms. The berry that is most sought after in the late summer is the cloudberry, the delicious gold of the swamps. Animals also start to prepare for the coming winter – birds teach their young how to fly and the forest wildlife stock up with food for the winter. The evenings are already darker and the sun sets for the first time all summer. But only for a moment.
Vibrantly Coloured Autumnal Ruska
In September, nature blossoms one more time before winter. The brilliance of ruska colours nature in thousands of different colours. The air is limpid and fresh. The sky is blue. The late autumn berries, lingonberry and cranberry ripen with the night time below zero temperatures. Migratory birds head south to return once more in the spring. Nature rests as it waits for the onset of winter.
First Snowfall Time
In October – November, nature is prepared to receive winter by entwining itself in a gentle grey mist in the wait for snow. The evenings become darker in the advent of the twilight time. Soon Christmas will be upon us once again.
